Ok, this is probably the dumbest question ever posted here. But does anyone
know how to open the plastic box that the software comes in? I have been
staring at it and fiddling with it for 1/2 hour. Is this some kind of
screening test Microsoft uses to determine who is worthy to use its software?

Not even close... I see others have already answered your question. But,
just so you don't feel bad, believe me, not even close...

Seeing how much of a pain it is to open the box, just wait until you
actually try to use what's inside!

Actually there's a video about exactly this on youtube, rather poor
quality though.

You're not the first one to ask this question. Just go back
to the first week or so after Vista was released and you'll
find a number of posts of a similar nature. Seems some folk
used a hammer, a hacksaw, or sharp instruments such as
knives to get the case open. In my case I was lucky. I was
fiddling around with the thing after having pulled the tab
and wondering why the case wouldn't open. As I was turning
the case around looking for the hinge line it just flopped
open in my lap. It was only after that that I noticed
instructions on opening the case, in real small print, on
one of the labels.

Ps: In case anyone is wondering why I didn't explain how to
open the case, it's because I see your question has been
answered by other posters already.

the box is stupid too... even the box is non user friendly!

See the curved part of the packaging? MS even cut corners on that part
of Vista! ;)

my hacksaw can open any MS package...but getting the product to work is
sometimes a little harder! LOL

I know a lot of people are amused, but I've never had an issue with the new
boxes.

Just grab the grips and pull.

I've got 2 Ultimate Boxes, 1 Home Premium, 1 Office 2k7, and 1 Live OneCare
box.

I think that the very fact that people have to ask and that MS has to
post a tutorial on how to do it, says something all by itself.

Yes. Unfortunately, it say more about the people seeking help than
anything else.

Any
package ought to be simple to open, or at least have clear instructions
that anyone can understand.

All of the retail boxes I've seen on the shelves do have instructions.
With pictures. They're small, but still readily visible.

anyone from MS shouldn't deserve such a nice end like that i'm voting for
