I have XP with SP2 and all current updates. When I try to open the firewall,
I get the message "Due to an unidentified problem windows cannot display
windows firewall settings" - what could be the cause of this please and how
can I fix it?

Thanks

Assuming the computer is clean:

"Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall
settings" error, try:
Start>Run regsvr32 hnetcfg.dll [enter]

I had the same problem a week ago. In my case a Trojan horse destroyed
it. I just downloaded the Sygate Personal edition (available for free
download) and installed it. I think it a better firewall than Windows'
inherent default one.

I tried to register the dll and got the following error message:
DLLRegisterServer in hnetcfg.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80070005

Any ideas?

0x80070005 is "Access Denied" error. Try that command from built-in
Administrator account.
