Dualboot with XP issues | How to transfer control to bootmgr.exe?

G

Guest

I originally had XP installed, added Vista and was able to have a nice dual
boot setup. Re-Installed XP (formatted drive), lost my dualboot.

Followed the MS article on recovering dual boot, but it will not work:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/919529/en-us

Only XP loads.

How does a previous version like XP know to load bootmgr.exe instead of it's
own ntldr.exe?

What do I need to modify in XP's current files such as boot.ini to make this
work?

Thanks,

Using the Vista install disk, run start-up repair. Then download and
install VistaBootPro and add a legacy os pointing to your XP system.

Statup repair can not find Vista.

I can go into the command prompt (using Vista CD) and I can successfully go
to the drive, but Vista can't find it.

Hello Armin,
Setup repair cannot find the \boot folder with the BCD file nor the \window
that contain Windows Vista.
Does the \boot folder exist and is there a BCD file in that folder? Can
you see that folder while inside of Repair if you open a CMD prompt?
It may be possible the drivers for volume are not present so the disk isn't
seen

These are not exe files. It's bootmgr and NTDLR no extension. The pointer
to those files in the bootcode on hard drive. Those two files have to
start prior to the boot.ini loading.
So the code in the master boot record ( MBR) points to load either NTLDR or
Bootmgr.
NTLDR in turn would then load the boot.ini.
Bootmgr would load the BCD file, which if had a entry to Windows XP would
include a pointer to load NTLDR which then would load the copy of boot.ini.

What do I need to modify in XP's current files such as boot.ini to make this
work?
This can't happen, NTLDR has no way of passing control to Bootmgr, has no
knowledge of bootmgr and contains functionality above what bootmgr..
Bootmgr has the ability to point to NTLDR and thus work,
The change has to come from loading bootmgr properly at boot time and
having a correct BCD file present.
