Some of you may remember I ordererd a cheap-o psu last month.
Well it's still not here
and I just got a message saying that it was damaged and returned to the
vendor, who is sending me a replacement crapola 550watt psu.
now, I've worked on e-machines so I know about crap
anyway, so I've got a 250watt and a 300watt. The 250 has seen some years,
and the 300 is unused.
What if I just power the hdd, 3.5 and floppy off of the old at psu, and run
only the mobo and cpu off of the 300watt unit?

oh and I just got my mobo and noticed this news group is listed in the next
to last page of the users manual

Why not just use the 300W?

Seriously. I'm running a P4 2.8HGz, 1GBRAM, Radeon 9800 Pro, 120GB
Maxtor and a DVD Writer from a 300W PSU. It previously ran a similar
specced Athlon XP2500 system.

.... probably because you have a quality one, you can !

There is a simple way to incorporate 2 power supplies into one desktop, and
all you need is a little wire, a soldering iron, and enough room inside your
case for the second power supply. Make sure the second power supply fan is
able to blow through an adequate opening in the case, and its power
connection and on/off switch are accessible. The following website provides
complete instructions, and I know it works because I have tried it myself:

The grounds of both supplies have to be tied together. This is
usually no problem when the computer case is made of metal, but if
not, run some heavy wires (#16) between the cases of the supplies and
also between the drives and motherboard and the supplies. Assuming
both supplies are the ATX type, connect together their green wires
(Power_On/ signal from motherboard) of their 20-pin connectors.

Some supplies won't regulate properly without a minimum load of 1-3
amps on the +5V output (red wires), and if you run into this problem
with the supply for the disk drives, connect a few 10W resistors,
approximately 8-20 ohms, across some red and black wires.
