Dual-NICs with failover with Windows 2000 Server?

P

Pat Furrie

Is it possible to setup a Windows 2000 Server with two NICs and configure
them in such a way that one is the primary and the other is the backup NIC,
with either NIC using the same IP address (only one NIC active at any
moment)? I have two NAS servers that both have this behavior built-in, and
hoping to extend it to some of our servers. Each NIC is then plugged into
seperate network switches, allowing access to the server through the single
IP address.

Any suggstions on how to do this?

Thanks

No.

Have failover capabilityk utilizing dual NICs. One is a MassTech "MassNAS"
(actually an OEMd NAS from Xtore), and a Snap Server. Both have two
Ethernet ports, and both ports have cables which run to different network
switches on the same network. The configuration software in each of them
have "failover" modes which will switch traffic from one NIC to the second
one if needed. Each NAS is seen by a single IP address (both NICs
automatically use the same address, with only one active at any
point-in-time).

Ah! Ok. So this is mainly hardware implemented with its own special
drivers/software to make it happen? I don't don't think I could say
anything about that either way. I don't have any experience with it.

Ack! That idea died a well deservered death back in the 1960's I think.
They don't really make the letters mean anything special anymore. I have
thought of finding one of those old wooden paddles that had the ball and
rubber band, ditching the ball and band, printing the call letters on it
with a picture of and old ship's anchor and hang it on the wall. I want to
call it the "official W-A-N-D Anchor Spanker" for use when the newsroom
folks abuse thier machines or give the IT guy greif

I still run version 5.1.5 .
I have a copy of "5.2 rev A "
and a copy of "5.2 Release2 Rev D"

5.2 A had some problems that R2-RevD fixed, but there was not any
significant additional features or improvement in "D" over the older 5.1.5
that I cared about, so I left well enough alone and stayed with 5.1.5.
