Dual folders with same stuff in them in Root directory.

Hi,
I have two similar folders in root directory C:\.

One named:

8c8e22702a9893c7f100f30446 (Created date of 7 Feb 2008)

and other named:

731e2dae1695768447aab140 (created date of 15 JULY 2008)

BOTH HAVE THE FOLLOWING FOLDERS (with their same files & sub folders)
i386 with all next folders as subfolders of i386
asms
compdata
drw
ic
ikc
iknc
iknp
ikp
images
inc
inp
ip
i start
iang
new
root
setuptxt
system32
update
win9xmig
win9xupg
winntupg

My questions are
Why do I need two with same stuff?
Can I delete either one or the other?
Can I do a restore point, delete one or other and then access the PC if it
fails to get to that restore point via f8 key at startup.
I dont want to delete if I am not going to get back into system on next
bootup.

What are they for?

Any other information re them readily accepted!

regards
John H

Folders with such names are usually created when installing service packs.
They are not required for day-to-day operation. You can either delete them
straight away or do this if you want to play it absolutely safe:
- Add a suffix of .bad to each of them.
- Wait two weeks.
- If all is well, delete them.
