My computer is supposed to be a dual core but I can't view the two cpus in
the windows task manager, I thought I should be able to.

In Task manager:
- choose the "View" pull-down-menu
- choose the "CPU History" option
- choose "One Graph per CPU"

I do not have the options you mention in graphs instead, which I gather is
still just showing me one CPU. However I can't seem to get back to the
normal view of task manage now.

TIA

BW,

what do you mean with "normal view of task manager" ?
describe for me what this is, and we try to get you back to that...

When I normally open task manager I see a display with 5 file tabs at the
top, Applications, Processes, Performance Networking and Users. (Luckily I
have another PC to now look at this again) Now I have CPU Usage and CPU
Usage History Titles with three different graphs underneath these headings.
I have tried moving around my cursor, right clicking etc but can't seem to
come up with any way to get back to what I thought was the normal view as
described above. Hope this is enough to explain what I am now seeing.

TIA

Great, many thanks I am now back to my normal view.

Now back to the original question. I once again tried the original
suggestion from Edwin and am glad to say I can now see the two cpus, thanks
everyone. I will have to remember the double click on the border routine
though for future reference, does that happen with many utilities?

You must do the above when the Performance tab is selected, else you won't
see those choices.

if the CPU History shows only once choice, "One Graph, All CPUs", then you
are not set up to use both CPUs - you will need to do a Repair Install of
XP to get the Multiprocessor HAL installed. Google around before doing
this to make sure you are prepared...
