Dual boot Vist and XP question

G

Guest

I partitioned my hard drive and installed Windows Xp on C as my primary and
Vista on F as my secondary. The problem is that Vista took over and controls
the boot up, or so it seems. If I format the partition containing Vista, will
it render my PC toast? Will I have to completely rebuild my PC and install
only XP to get back to where I started?

I found this in http://www.vistabootpro.org/intro.php:
In multi-boot scenarios where users have both Windows Vista and an older
version of Windows installed, the BCD "interfaces" with the boot.ini file to
perfect multi-booting.
Would that suggest that I can format the Vista partition and go back to just
using XP?

Hi Angie :)

*DO NOT* change the Vista or XP drive letters to anything else after Vista
is installed. Vista will see the drive it is on as the C:\ drive, and show
XP on another letter drive when you are in Vista. XP will see itself on the
C:\ drive when you are in XP. This is just the way it does. So, no need to
about which OS is on which drive in that regard.

Do the following to install the Vista,

If you can open the VistaBoot Pro from XP, click Bootloader and set it for
Uninstall Vista Bootloader (return to XP). Close out.

Then right click on My Computer on the desktop>Manage>Disk Management>delete
that partition/drive that Vista is on. Then do the following:
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Click Tools>Folder Options>View and uncheck "Hide protected operating
system files" and click OK and close out of that function.
3. Close out of Windows Explorer and then reboot.
4. Back in XP, go back to Disk Management, click on the drive or partition
that
you deleted,
5. Right click on it and select new Partition, enter 40000 =40 MB (or 60000
= 60 MB, etc) or whatever size partition you want in the Volume size window
and click Next
6. Click the "Do not assign a drive letter" and click Next
7. Click "Do not format the drive" and click Next
8. Then click finish
9. Put in the Vista DVD in the ROM and restart the computer
10. When it comes up, select the drive from the list where you want Vista
installed and let
Vista format the drive/partition itself.

It does not matter that it does not have a letter as Vista will see it only
as C:\ anyway. The install will take a little longer as Vista will format
the drive, but, I have found that often it is best to let Vista do the
formatting and set up on it's own.

One Vista is installed, install the VistaBoot Pro:
1. When it opens click on the Configure tab and under the Bootloader
section, select XP or Vista from the drop down box to be your default OS.
2. Set the Boot time out for 30 seconds. Click apply.
3. IF you want to rename the Vista install to another name, in the
Entry-Based section, click on Select OS to modify. Select the Vista name and
in the Rename to window, type in whatever name you want to give it.
4. Click on the Manage Entries tab, and highlight the OS in the window that
you want to be the first in the boot menu, and if it is not in the list
first, click the Up tab to move it up.
5. Then click the Backup/Restore tab and save a backup of the new boot menu,
create a new folder on the XP drive and save it there, just in case.
Then close out of VistaBoot Pro and reboot

Hope this helps.

If you want to go back to only XP booting you can use the program you
mention to restore the xp booting process. If you want to dual boot, make
yourself clear.

Ahhh, that sounds exactly like what I was looking for. I will give this a

Hi Leroy :)

Am I correct in gathering that you want to dual boot?

1.When you install Vista, are you pre-formatting and drive for Vista? That
can sometimes cause this problem.

2. How did you install Vista? Put the DVD in the ROM and then reboot, or
start it logged on to XP?

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,

Yes I want to dual boot.

I followed the same direction you gave angie, going into disk management to
create the partition, but did not format or assign a drive letter. I then
rebooted, insert the vista dvd in the rom and restart the computer. I let
vista format the drive/partiton itself.

I've tried everything. All the suggestion in the news group. it goes through
the installation fine, when it time to reboot and go back into vista to
finish up (vista is suppose to reboot several times before completing the
setup), it stops at the boot manager and get the message when I select vista
from the menu. I get the message that winload.exe could not be loaded because
the application is missing or corrupt.

thanks,

Hi Leroy :)

When you say it stops at the boot manager and gives the error, does it do
this at the first reboot during the installation, or after it is finished
and reboots for the last time prior to startup?

Do you have SATA and IDE drives? Set your BIOS to read your CD/DVD ROM
drive first. Reboot and The try the install again.

I'm sorry it took so long to answer your response.
Yes, it gives the error at the first reboot during the installation.
I have IDE drives and my cd\dvd rom is set for first boot priority.
Do you know what else it may be.

2. Set the Boot time out for 3 seconds.

Your new boot menu should appear on restart
Hi Jan,

Yes I want to dual boot.

I followed the same direction you gave angie, going into disk management
to
create the partition, but did not format or assign a drive letter. I then
rebooted, insert the vista dvd in the rom and restart the computer. I let
vista format the drive/partiton itself.

I've tried everything. All the suggestion in the news group. it goes
through
the installation fine, when it time to reboot and go back into vista to
finish up (vista is suppose to reboot several times before completing the
setup), it stops at the boot manager and get the message when I select
vista
from the menu. I get the message that winload.exe could not be loaded
because
the application is missing or corrupt.

thanks,
leroy

Hi Jan Il,

I did the same steps you said to Angie but I get problem isth
winload.exe,
"INFO: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application
is
missing or ocrrupt. (I have a 80gb drive, partition into 2 equal drives
(40gb), with XP on C drive). ANy other solution to this problem. Thanks
Leroy

Hi Angie :)

*DO NOT* change the Vista or XP drive letters to anything else after
Vista
is installed. Vista will see the drive it is on as the C:\ drive, and
show
XP on another letter drive when you are in Vista. XP will see itself
on
the
C:\ drive when you are in XP. This is just the way it does. So, no
need
to
about which OS is on which drive in that regard.

Do the following to install the Vista,

If you can open the VistaBoot Pro from XP, click Bootloader and set it
for
Uninstall Vista Bootloader (return to XP). Close out.

Then right click on My Computer on the desktop>Manage>Disk
Management>delete
that partition/drive that Vista is on. Then do the following:
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Click Tools>Folder Options>View and uncheck "Hide protected
operating
system files" and click OK and close out of that function.
3. Close out of Windows Explorer and then reboot.
4. Back in XP, go back to Disk Management, click on the drive or
partition
that
you deleted,
5. Right click on it and select new Partition, enter 40000 =40 MB (or
60000
= 60 MB, etc) or whatever size partition you want in the Volume size
window
and click Next
6. Click the "Do not assign a drive letter" and click Next
7. Click "Do not format the drive" and click Next
8. Then click finish
9. Put in the Vista DVD in the ROM and restart the computer
10. When it comes up, select the drive from the list where you want
Vista
installed and let
Vista format the drive/partition itself.

It does not matter that it does not have a letter as Vista will see it
only
as C:\ anyway. The install will take a little longer as Vista will
format
the drive, but, I have found that often it is best to let Vista do the
formatting and set up on it's own.

One Vista is installed, install the VistaBoot Pro:
1. When it opens click on the Configure tab and under the Bootloader
section, select XP or Vista from the drop down box to be your default
OS.
2. Set the Boot time out for 30 seconds. Click apply.
3. IF you want to rename the Vista install to another name, in the
Entry-Based section, click on Select OS to modify. Select the Vista
name
and
in the Rename to window, type in whatever name you want to give it.
4. Click on the Manage Entries tab, and highlight the OS in the window
that
you want to be the first in the boot menu, and if it is not in the
list
first, click the Up tab to move it up.
5. Then click the Backup/Restore tab and save a backup of the new boot
menu,
create a new folder on the XP drive and save it there, just in case.
Then close out of VistaBoot Pro and reboot

Hope this helps.

I partitioned my hard drive and installed Windows Xp on C as my
primary
and
Vista on F as my secondary. The problem is that Vista took over and
controls
the boot up, or so it seems. If I format the partition containing
Vista,
will
it render my PC toast? Will I have to completely rebuild my PC and
install
only XP to get back to where I started?
