If your current WinXP partition uses the FAT32 file system,
follow the links that Carey Frisch provided in his reply.

If it uses the NTFS file system, post again. Contrary to
what these links say, it is possible to install Win98 on
such a machine. However, you will need some third-party
tools plus a measure of patience to get things going.

As I don't have a floppy drive drive on my laptop I tried creating a bootable
cd but it couldn't read a certain file on the floppy. I checked for errors.
Do I have use a startup disk for Installing Windows 98 onto the D:\ drive

Dual booting on a laptop can get complicated. One of the things you
probably should not do is start from scratch with a laptop unless you have
some experience working with laptops. Neither XP nor Win98 will have all of
the non-standard drivers laptop manufacturers write for their proprietary
devices. You should verify that drivers exist for both operating systems
and then download them and burn them to a cd before making any changes.

Again, I would encourage you to look at Virtual PC 2004 which you can simply
install on Windows XP and then install Windows 98 into a virtual computer
under VPC. VPC is designed to get out of having to reboot, partition, and
so on. There is a 45-day free trial.
