dual boot not working

P

paranoid

I have XP installed on C, and I partitioned the drive, and loaded up Vista
from the DVD, started the installation, but when the computer reboots during
the install, it does not have the option to choose which OS, and therefore
does not finish installation? I looked under system startup under XP, and
there is no Vista option...

Any ideas?

Hi paranoid--

Of course, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean the Redmond campus
isn't out to get you. Did the boys and girls from Redmond give you any
error message when you try to boot? What do you see precisely when you turn
on your computer instead of what you should see? What you should see of
course is this:

Precisely what did you use to create that partition you wanted to park Vista
upon, and how did you do it?

You didn't try to run a 64 bit Vista from a 32 bit XP desktop did you?

You haven't been completely clear. I assume you mean that instead of
running the Vista setup from the XP desktop, I don't think it matters
whether you are using X86 or X64 as long as you are using what your machine
accomodates, you made a partition for Vista and ran the Vista DVD and chose
it hitting Advanced on the setup that allows you to choose.

I don't know why you don't have a boot choice and the boot loaders don't
seem to be working. I do know how to fix this.

You should be seeing this:

The key to repair is probably to either try to use Startup Repair since your
original post indicates you do have a DVD, or to use Vista Boot Pro:

These MSKBS may be helpful, but I'd use Vista Boot Pro--this first MSKB
foolishly assumes the person can boot to Windows Vista when most of them
needing it can't--seems to be a ridiculous assumption.

You can certainly try to do a Startup Repair using the DVD and instructions
for doing it are below:

You can also use Vista Boot Pro:

***Startup Repair and System Restore from the Win Recovery Environment on
the DVD***

You can run Startup Repair by putting your Vista DVD in after the
language screen in setup. You can also run System Restore from the same
location.

You run the startup repair tool this way (and system restore from here is
also sometimes effective):

Note The computer must be configured to start from a CD or from a DVD. For
information about how to configure the computer to start from a CD or from a
DVD, see the information that came with the computer.
2. Restart the computer. To do this, click Start, click the arrow next to
the Lock button, and then click Restart.

This usually means that you enter bios setup by whatever key or keys
(sometimes there is more than one key that will do it for your model--go to
pc manufacturer site) and configure CD to be first in the boot order (this
will allow you to boot from the Vista DVD as well):

Note If you cannot restart the computer by using this method, use the power
button to turn off the computer. Then, turn the computer back on.

3. Set your language preference, and then click Next.

Note In most cases, the startup repair process starts automatically, and you
do not have the option to select it in the System Recovery Options menu.

4. Click Repair your computer.

5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click the operating system
that you want to repair, and then click Next.

6. In the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair to start the
repair process.

7. When the repair process is complete, click Finish.

Good luck,

What exactly does a moron with no federal litigation experience like Fredo
Gonzales do every day except for being Karl Rove's bitch?

How does a complete moron like Monica Goodling wind up with hiring and
firing power as the puppet of Karl Rove who should have been prosecuted?
Goodling has no litigation experience and graduated from a 4th tier law
school whose main text is the Bible. It's like having the janitor supervise
Ray Ozzie and Balmer and Gates and thousands of computer science engineers.
No wonder prosecutions by US Attorneys targeted Dems 10 to 1.

The reason she is hiding is because it will be revealed she is a moron with
no ligitation experience whatsoever if she appears before House or Senate
judiciary besides being Karl Rove's bitch.

The Republican party in the U.S. is committing a slightly slower than real
time suicide and you are watching it play out. Fred Thompson would be the
qunitissential candidate for man who most looks like a Bassett Hound for
President. He hasn't got a prayer nor do any of their other losers. Rudy
Guilliani facillitated 911--if he had been part of Bin Ladin's team he
couldn't have made it easier. Putting his communications center in the WTC
when he had been told by everyone to bury it in Brooklyn was moronic. Now
it's buried in Brooklyn. New York still does not have frequencies shared by
the EMTs, the NYPD, and the NYFD. This resulted in the deaths of over 200
firemen as well as the people who were burned to death or jumped to death.

The President of the US is a complete moron. He believes the people of the
U.S. are complete morons, and some of you who are interested in Windows and
computers believe you aren't, but you don't overcome the apathy that brings
you this piss poor leadership and demand his outster and for coffins in
Dover to quit filling up with yout countrymen and occassionally women.
Until you do, families will continue to be ruined by mismanaging cowards who
don't dare put themselves or their families in harm's way. Phrases are
being rearranged and the chairs on the deck of the Titanic that is the U.S.
government stay the same.

You wouldn't accept a delusional moron to run the cash register at the
grocery store you visited in the last 72 hours, but you have several of them
running your country.
