dropdowns and forms

I would like to use a dropdown on a form for more defined entries. Can I
have the selected data submitted to a form? Or must I use a hidden field to
gather the selected and use that field to post?

The form will post the selected item from the dropdown - there is no need to
use a hidden field for this.
