dropdown username

You know when you go to a website that has a protected area and you are
prompted for a username and password? The username input box has a dropdown.
How do I clear out this dropdown? What controls it from getting populated?

A1. Highlight the selection and Delete it.

A2. IE Tools > Internet Options > Content > AutoComplete > Settings.
 
I have the same problem and highlighting and deleting hasn't worked b/c it
won't let you highlight the username. Incidentally, in my case, the username
is a hotmail address. Also tried to opt out of autocomplete options, which
had no effect either.
