Drop shadows for desktop icons

Normally, when I select a wallpaper in XP (Professional), the background of
the desktop icon labels becomes transparent and the text becomes some sort of
clear type; I think that was a great improvement over earlier Windows
versions where the desktop icons always screwed up the wallpaper with white
text on a solid background.
Apparently this feature can be controlled through the System applet in
Control Panel, by selecting Advanced, then Performance settings, and there
the item before the last one: Use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop.

Unfortunately, on my system this doesn't do anything, probably because of
some registry tweak that disables this feature.
Does anybody have an idea how I can fix this? What registry keys affect
these icon shadows?

Right-click on your desktop and select:

Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web (tab)
and uncheck "Lock Desktop Items", click OK and APPLY.

Also, check this setting:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:
Properties > Advanced > Performance settings >
Visual Effects, place a check next to "Use Drop Shadows
for Icon Labels on the Desktop", then click "apply".
