Over the last few weeks (but especially the last few days), I've been getting fewer and fewer spam e-mails... and this article might be why:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27689714/

The volume of junk e-mail sent worldwide dropped drastically today after a Web hosting firm identified by the computer security community as a major host of organizations allegedy engaged in spam activity was taken offline, according to security firms that monitor spam distribution online.

While its gleaming, state-of-the-art, 30-story office tower in downtown San Jose, Calif., hardly looks like the staging ground for what could be called a full-scale cyber crime offensive, security experts have found that a relatively small firm at that location is home to servers that serve as a gateway for a significant portion of the world's junk e-mail.

Have other people noticed a big drop too?

I have noticed a drop, yes.

While we're on the subject, a word of warning for anybody considering using Gumtree.

I put a few things up for sale on the Gumtree site.

I had several e-mails weeks after the ads were placed simply asking 'still available?' or similar.

I replied to the first few saying the item(s) were still available.

Shortly thereafter, in every case, I was bombarded with spam. Fortunately I blocked all with Mailwasher and they've stopped now.

So unless an enquirer to a Gumtree ad supplies their phone number, I'd be wary. Your e-mail address isn't shown on the Gumtree site but of course as soon as you reply to an enquiry you're playing up to spammers harvesting e-mail addresses.

Now I just ignore all enquiries unless there's a phone number for me to call.

And yes, I did sell a couple of items on Gumtree, it's every bit as good, if not better, than E-Bay.

Never respond on Gumtree unless someone includes telephone number.
As you say that way you now it's a real response!

No decrease here :( In fact me spam has increased, I am now getting mail that supposedly comes from myself advertising alls orts of rubbish, barbarians and viagra not in my lifetime. Still good old googlemail just sends them into the spam folder automaticaly so they are not that much of a bother.

They should can the spammers, literaly !! ;)

I wouldn't call it a big drop but there does seem to be less than there was.

And very welcome too.

My Gmail account gets 100's of spam e-mails too, 99.9% of which go to the spam folder - oddly, I've not even used the account or told anyone my gmail address. I just signed up when it came out, because it looked good - but never actually made the transition :)

I replied to one spammer recently mentioning i did not need any pills to get it up!!
They replied in kind with only 10 a day more spam emails, which all get into the spam box anyway.:thumb:

The junk-mail page of my Hotmail - which, to be fair, is not my main adds, was brimming with phishing mail when I checked it a couple of days ago. I had "won" so many lotteries and was being advised of so many "inheritances" that by now, I should be the richest woman in Britain

Hi,

Glad to come to this community.

Spam email was used to be a big trouble to me, but now the spam email is seldom coming. That's good.
