drop-down form field boxes help

I've created a template with several drop-down form fields. When I protect
the template, I'm not seeing what I expected which is drop-down boxes with
the arrows and the first choice.
What I see is the shaded field (I formatted for shaded field) and only when
I click on that field do I see the arrow appear.
Is there any way to make the dropdown box look like a dropdown box all the
time or is this a limitation of the drop-down box form field?
