Drop down fill box does not appear when cell clicked.

I have created a fill in drop down boxes using the data validation tab in
excel 2007. Was working fine, but for reasons unknow all of the cells that
have data validation drop downs do not work. When clicking the cells the
drop down boxes do not appear. (The arrow that used to appear to the right
of the cell does not show.) All the setting are correct in the data
validation set-up. Data is validated per lists. Any thoughts as to why the
drop down arrow does not show any longer?

I have seen this once before. We had Data Validation pull-downs on a sheet
as well as some Shapes. We deleted all the Shapes and the pull-downs
vanished as well.

Deleting all Shapes also seems to kill the AutoFilter pull-downs.
