Drop cap style

I'm trying to create a drop cap style in a template but since it is a
character style, I don't see a way to include the drop cap formatting into
the style parameters. It doesn't work if I ask it to "update to match
selection" for an already formatted letter and there's no way to access the
drop cap option in modifying a style. I'm having trouble getting the
formatting for the frame and drop cap into a character style and if I make it
paragraph style, where I have these options, then I have a problem applying
it just to one character. Is it not possible to make the drop cap formatting
part of a style definition?

No, drap cap formatting cannot be saved to a style. But note that if
you go into the Drop Cap dialog box and set the desired options, you
can then click in each of the other paragraphs that should have the
same formatting, and press F4 (this repeats the formatting).

The above method should work fine, assuming that there are not too
many drop caps in your document.

I think I've found a way to make it work by putting the first letter of the
paragraph in its own paragraph and then making it a paragraph style and
fine-tuning the style to place at the beginning of the paragraph (vertical
position .03 from paragraph).

I'm glad you got it sorted.

FWIW, drop caps use frames, which can indeed be stored in a paragraph
style. Creating a style based on an existing drop cap does seem to
work (but I haven't tested this thoroughly). Of course, this means
that you would have to manually split each paragraph (that should have
a drop cap) after the first letter, and then apply your "drop cap
style" to the first paragraph and your body text style to the second
one.
