drives won't read

A short while after I installed Norton Anti-Spam it began to make problems.
Their densely mazed Support site said I should un-install it, and re-install
it. I uninstalled it. (A couple of hours, apparently, before Norton put up a
fix for the problem.)
When I tried to re-install the program I discovered that none of my
drives will read data files in Normal Mode. All five have the problem: two
CD drives, a Zip drive, a floppy drive, and a digital Film Reader. The CD
drives will read music files, and they will both burn data from my hard
drive, which is then readable on another computer. They will all read data
files in Safe Mode. Although, of course, I can't run anything from them in
that Mode, I can transfer files such as digital camera files to my hard
drive, etc. (I am running Windows 2000.)
Symantec online Support has sent me links to a half dozen of their
Support files (files I was aware of - I can read), but none of them address
the problem. It seems to me that the uninstall dumped a necessary file, but
which one and how I get it back I don't know. Symantec should, but ain't
telling!
What can I do? I can't, of course, easily load anything from a disk -
they won't read. Any ideas? Symantec seems to have given up - they do not
reply to my update replies to them, and I have the feeling that the person
assigned to me is way over his head.
