drivers?

I have a laptop that I recently re-installed WinXP Pro on. I was able to
install all the devices except the onboard sound device. When I install the
drivers for the "SiS 7012 Audio Device", I get the following error:
"The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display
name."

I know the drivers are correct since I used them the last 3 times I had to
install WinXP. I just got the latest drivers from the SiS website and the
installer produces the same error.

I've tried uninstalling the device, disabling it, installing the drivers in
safe-mode and nothing appears to make anything better.

try this:
go into windows help and support center choose 'tools' the choose system
configuration utility.
in here there is a tab called 'services' search in this tab to see if you
can find anything to do with the sis7012 or whatever it was called.
if theres something there maybe you could disable it temporarily?
i hope that helps.

Thanks for the relpies. Unfortunately, neither suggestion worked. I still
get the same error with the alternate drivers and I can't find a thing in the
Services that is in anyway related to this. Any other thoughts?

Well, I think we might finally be making some progress. I wasn't able to get
it to install by changing the dir to C:\Windows nor was I able to get it to
install in any other directory. I was still getting that name in use error.
However, I was able to use "Your Uninstaller 2004 Pro" to remove the
previously installed files and then the installer completed rather than
terminating and providing that error. Unfortunately, when the installer
finishes, Windows imediately has the balloon notification that new hardware
has been found. Windows then proceeds to install drives or something and
gives the error about the name in use thing.

I don't really know who made it. But according to SiSoftware Sandra and
Lavalys Everest, it is an SiS chip. The graphics adapter is as well an SiS
chip as is the modem and ethernet. I have tried various C-Media drives and
Windows refuses to install them saying they don't match hardware
configurations.

Oh man. I finally fixed the problem. I spent the last 3 hours searching
through my resistry and making modifications. Just taking out any entry that
had anything to do with SiS 7012 or SiS 7018. You wouldn't believe how many
times 'sis' appears in the registry. Anyway, after all that, I simply went
and uninstalled the device and drives and reinstalled and I can hear again.
Well, thanks for all the help.
