Hello, I have inadvertently deleted the audio driver/program from my pc
whilst cleaning up my hard drive. Is there a "generic" driver I can download
so we can get some sound back into our lives??

Not really.

You need to find out what sound card you have (open the computer up, look in
your manuals, break out the CD/DVDs that shipped with the system, look
online at the system manufacturer's web page for manuals, drivers, etc...)
and install the proper driver for your sound card.

Get the correct drivers from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor.

Yes, get the drivers for your sound card the manfacturers web site

You could also try a System Restore to before the time you did the disk
clean up; then be careful not to delete the sound card's software.

Just deleting it as opposed to formally uninstalling it would cause
unforeseen problems too.
