Driver Download Problems

I have a problem that I believe was caused by a download
from the Windows update program. I have a Gateway
notebook using Windows XP, Pentium III, and 512 of Ram.
I also have Norton's Anti-Virus 2003 which I update
weekly and a local D-Link wireless hookup. On Jan 19, I
downloaded and installed a CTX modem software update, Nov
11, 2003 and a Tex Instruments network software update,
Sep 30, 2003. As soon as I did, I lost my wireless
connection and my anti-virus program. After many
attempts to run both of these programs, I elected to
restore my computer to a period prior to the download and
installing of the two updates. This restored my access
to the wireless system, but still was unable to run the
Norton Anti-Virus Program. At that point I decided to
uninstall and reinstall the anti-virus program. The
uninstall program seemed to be working and then a box
jumped up that said, "Program
C:/WINNT/Installer/ms1b7.temp, abnormal program
termination". When I cleared this box, an installer info
box came up with Error 1722, problem with Windows
Installer Package. I am unable to uninstall my Norton
Anti-Virus Program. Installing the Norton Anti-Virus CD
to try to reinstall the program produces a box
to "uninstall" the Norton Anti-Virus Program. Clicking
on the uninstall starts the whole process over again,
which results in the same error messages. Since this
program began immediately after installing the two
Windows updates, I conclude that I need some help through
the Windows Program to fix the uninstaller program. Any
help will be appreciated.

Sincerely,

GH

Check www.symantec.com site for info ' how to uninstall' - When you get a
prob. with Norton its often neccessary to Uninstall then follow the manual
removal info on their site; Before attempting to reinstall, then do so with
no other apps, inc TaskBar apps, running.
If you used Winupdate to update drivers, dont. Use Gateway site for driver
updates; if this hardware came preinstalled, otherwise use hardware
manu.site.
If you update a driver, which the causes a problem theres no need to use sys
restore, you can Rollback the driver in Comp.Hardware - see help for details

Additionally, just a note, but before uninstalling a program like
Norton AV, it is a good idea to first close the program AND remove the
the components from the startup routine (by running the msconfig tool
and unchecking the lines that run Norton). Then reboot the machine.
Then uninstall the program.
