My laptop is infected with some kind of virus that shuts down the laptop
after a little popup comes up with some information and a red cross. I cant
stop it shutting down and no anti virus software can pick it up at all. My
only option is to wipe my drive and hope it destroys the virus, but the big
big problem is i have lost my disk that comes with the laptop, which from
what i have read is the only thing possible to wipe your drive unless you buy
some software, but my dad thinks we should leave it to a pro, any advise?

I am using an Acer TravelMate 4150
Windows xp

Contact those you bought the system from and ask for help.

"some information" What information? Exactly as written -please do not
paraphrase?

Are you using Internet Explorer or another browser?

I cant really read the information in time before the laptop shuts down, and
even if i catch part its to complicated to remember, let alone write down,
sorry.

I have AOL 9.0 but i use internet explorer most of the time. I dont think i
got the virus of the internet though, in fact im pretty sure.

Please post a copy of the Error message. However, be warned . They are
difficult to interpret.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties,
Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.
