Drive Speed Issues

I have an older Dell computer, Pentium 4 , 1.8 gHz. It has a CD burner and a
Memorex 8X DVD burner; both internal. I seem to be having an issue with drive
specifications. The CD burner is now only being seen as an 8X burner. How can
I get it to be seen correctly.

How are the CD/DVD drives connect? Are they on the sameinternal IDE cable?
If yes, which is Master/ Slave drive? What software are you using to give you
the CD burner drive speed? What utilities do you have "automatically" start
in your Windows? (Do you have Nero DriveSpeed??)

Did you re-install XP sometime? Did you also install the motherboard chipset
drivers??

Did you find the drives specifications?

If the incorrect size is being reported by more than one software, the drive
itself is probably the issue. If you can, try it in another computer to find
out for sure. If it is the drive, then check Dell's website for a firmware
update sometimes this will fix that problem.

If the incorrect size is only reported by one piece of software try
re-installing it. (reboot after the uninstall) If it is still a problem then
see if there are any patches\updates for that software.

Sam and Yves, If you are still out there thanks. I signed up for notification
of replies but was never contacted. I am using Roxio. The slave is the DVD
and the CD is master. and yes, they are on the same cable. I have not re
installed XP only updated it with Windows update system.

Memorex does not offer support for the drive and it is not clear which on it
is on the web site for firm ware updates. I can find the info for the NEC
drive on thier site as well as on Dell's support pages. It seems to have
current firmware.

I don't recall when this started to happen but after the installation of the
DVD every thing was working fine. Roxio identified each drive with
appropriate burn speeds.

I should add that the cd was original equipment and I added the DVD almost
three years ago. The only hardware change since then was a swap of extra HD;
a 60GB to a 200GB that was internal and was not main drive.
