drive mapping failure over VPN on XP home

I'm trying to map a drive over a VPN connection using the
Fully Qualified Domain Name and am receiving System Error
53: network path was not found. I've installed the latest
service pack, enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP, ensured the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is running, and enabled the
use of an LMHosts file with no luck.

I can ping the IP address, but can't map to it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
How are you trying to map to it?

Try this command and see if this works - "net use \\server\<share>
/u:<domain or server>\<username> <passwd>". This should work.
