when i place a flash card in the reader it will not take on a new drive
letter but wants one that's already taken. I have to go into the system to
change it.

How can i get it to take the next available drive letter?

There is a known bug in Windows XP where network drives mounted with
low drive letters are not seen by removable usb-type
disks/drives/memory cards when they are assigned drive letters.
There are two workarounds. One is to use the Disk Manager to change
the drive letter on your flash card as you have found. The other
workaround is to mount all network drives using high drive letters.

See:
"New drive or mapped network drive not available in Windows Explorer"

we have only one network drive which is z drive letter.

Also, when changing the drive letter assigned to the usb drive manually in
mgmt the pc needs to be rebooted for the change to take affect. This is true
of all workstations in the building which is costing a lot of wasted time.

How do you see this. Do you see that a drive letter is
assingned to two different drives?

Very strange. Did it start happen after a new software
has been installed or a Windows update or did it happen
since you got the computers?

Any software installed that interfere on driver level,
like a virus scanner or avirtual CD tool?

There is one other condition that I've seen cause this problem and that
was when Adobe Photoshop "Elements" program installed when I was
installing the free Adobe Reader. When I uninstalled the Elements
program through the control panel Add/Remove programs, I regained
control of my USB media. Some people have claimed it is the Adobe
Download manager (loaded with Elements) that is the real problem and
can be disabled in the preferences somewhere.

Good Luck,
John
