drive letter won't change

I'm repairing an xp installaion and I can't get the root drive letter to c:.
it stays at e: . C is available and i only have 1 hd & 1 dvd & 1 floppy
installed. the hd has 2 logical drives

I assume that Windows was installed on drive C:, not
on drive E:. I also assume that you're attempting to
change the drive letter in Disk Management and that
it refuses to let you do it. (It's a good idea to state these
essential things in your post!). If so then you can change
the drive letter by running regedit.exe and navigating
to HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices. Now rename
\DosDevices\E: to DosDevices\C:, then reboot the machine.
