Drive letter problems

I had to replace my burnt out PSU with a JEANTECH low noise 120mm fan power
supply, on my P4 processor 550 with HT Technology.

I am sure I have connected everything correctly however I now have a drive
letter association problem.

MY DVDRW which should be letter F:, is actually coming up as compact flash
when I look in windows explorer. All other subsequent removable drive (SD,
Memory stick etc) all seem to have moved up one letter, and the final
removable disk on letter J: is showing a Removable Disk when in fact it
should be named.

Is there any way I can get my DVDRW to show up correctly (under properties
it does show as CD drive)

Is there an easy way for me to get all drives to show up correctly?

Thanks

Click Start / Run, then type diskmgmt.msc {OK}. Now right-click
your various drives and re-assign their drive letters the way you
want them to be.

Pegasus,

Thanks, however in disk management drives appear ok. It is in windows
explorer folder view that they all go wrong.

Thanks anyway for trying.

Any drive letter you assign in the Disk Management console
will also be reflected in Windows Explorer. In other words,
if you assign drive letter K: to your DVD drive in Disk
Management then your DVD will appear under drive letter
K: in Explorer or in My Computer.

If your drive is being detected as the wrong type of hardware then
open Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager. Locate the
entry for this device, right-click on it and select Uninstall. Reboot
the computer and it should redetect the drive and identify it
properly.

Good luck

Pegasus,

Guess what, my drives are all correct in Disk Management console. It is
descriptions in Windows explorer that are wrong. If I look at each drives
proporties in Windows Explorer my DVDRW which is now named Caompact Flash,
does indeed have all the proporties of my DVDRW.

However I can change all drive names from G: onwards but system will not
allow me to change F: which is the one causing all the problems.

Thanks for your help it is apprecaited.

Ron,

Thanks for the idea.

I have tried it and uninstalled my DVDrw and the 7 in 1 card reader.

Same problem still exists in windows explorer. Explorer will not even let me
change name on drive f: (which is where my DVDRW is , although it shows as
Compact Flash!).

In Disk Management console, all appears ok, it seems to be the mapping
between explorer and disk management console.

Thnaks for your input, it was really appreciated.

Please be specific: ***Why*** is it that that you cannot
change drive letter F:? What are you trying to change it to?
What happens when you try? What is the problem it
causes?

Pegasus,

When in windows explorer if I right click drive F: to rename as DVDRW, the
option to rename is not on the menu. It is for all other drives form G:
onwards.

In Disk Management, all my drives show up as correct. i.e. it shows drive F:
as DVDRW, and compact flash as drve G: If I do change the DVDRW to say drive
W:, in windows explorer this still shows as compact flash in drive w:.

So no need to change anything there, and problem resides in windows explorer.

Thanks for your continued help.

You can change the label of hard disks or floppy disks
(because they are re-writeable) but you cannot change
the label of a CD (because it is not re-writeable).

This, of course, has nothing to do with the drive letter,
in spite of your Subject line.

Pegasus,

sorry if the descriptioin of problem is confusing, I know I am totally
confused.

I am not trying to chnage the albel, it is definetely the drive lettering.

In windows explorer my disk letters are:

A: Floppy disk
C: hard drive 1
D: hard drive 2
E DVD Rom
F: Compact flash
G: Smart Media
H:Multi Media
I: Memory Stick
J: Removable Disk

In Disk Management my drives show as

A: Floppy disk
C: hard drive 1
D: hard drive 2
E DVD Rom
F: DVD RW
G: compact flash
H: Smart Media
I : Multi media
J: Memory disk

And what is in disk mamangement is the components I actually have.

What I would like ot see is Widows explorer read same as what is in disk
management.

You might have a corrupted profile. Log on under a different
account and check if the problem persists.

Pegasus,

Check by signing on to another two other users. Same problem exists.

Does this mean I am going to have to go for a re install?

JIM

I have never seen the problem. If renaming the incorrect
drive letter assignments in Disk Manager does not fix the
problem then I am unable to offer any further suggestions.
