Drive letter discrepancy / Transfer Wizard Problem

I have just installed a new hard drive on my Dell computer because of
squealing problems. XP Home was installed onto a new C: partition using the
installation CD. Once inside Windows, the drive letter for the hard drive is
now F: !

Using the Drive Management feature, it tells me that I cannot alter the
drive letter of my hard drive.

Question 1. How do I get this drive to C: ???

Using Files and Transfer, I backed up my settings and files separately.
Gsplit across 7 CDs, once I united them back to their original files on my
HD, Files and Transfer gives me the message "The location given does not
contain the stored information..."

Question 2: How do I get my files back?

My thinking is that these two problems are related.

Help! Please!

I am afraid you need to reinstall Windows without any external zip or hard
drives attached. Also if you have a internal second or more hard drives, you
should disconnect the drive(s) as well to ensure Windows will be on the C
Drive.

FIXMBR = Repairs the start registry for the specified OS by means of
the Recovery Console

HOW TO:

.. Insert the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM

.. Wait for the installation process to stop and press "R"

.. Select Drive to work on with the number to the left of the drive letter
where the OS is installed

.. Type the administrator password

.. C:\>WINDOWS> appears, and is ready to receive the command to do the
repair.

Next type FIXMBR and confirm the command, next exit the Recovery Console and
the computer restarts with a new start sector and hopefuly with the correct
drive letter.

Also in the recovery console type MAP after the FIXMBR command to help
assign the correct letter to the system drive.

Okay, here's the next set of problems:

fixmbr and map did not do anything.
I am now trying to reformat or just reinstall Windows.

When trying to reboot to the XP disc, after loading all the drivers, it
tells me:
Unknown Hard Error:
\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll

When I create a floppy boot disk and reset, the computer tells me:
"I/O error F1 to reboot F2 for system setup"

I've tried two different floppy disks, the hardware manager tells me there's
no problem with the floppy drive/disks, hard drive diagnostics pass as well.

How do I reinstall Windows or reformat?

If you need to recover files from the HD install it on the computer as slave
with the old HD as Master (if it still runs) and format it from the old OS
in the Windows interface (Management Tools\Disc Management) and do a fresh
install in the normal maner.
