The drive letter D:\ is missing in "My Computer" I cannot open my CD-ROM and
I do not have the CD for my OS (Windows Xp Home) w/service pack 2. I don't
know when I lost the drive letter. I just found this when I went to view
photos on a disc and couldn't open the door to insert disc. I'm sorry if my
terminology is incorrect, I'm in no way an advanced user, tho' I get an
education everyday! Even if I did have the instasllation disc for Xp i
couldn't insert it, door won't open!

If pushing the button on the front of the CD-ROM drive does not open the
drawer, it is likely that the drive has died.

There is also a little tiny hole on most drives. Inserting straightened out
paper clip or similar in this hole may open the drawer. It could be a CD
which was inserted badly preventing the drive from working.

Some programs can take exclusive rights to a drive and will not allow other
usage while the program is active, try rebooting and see if it will open.

Ah! Nooo! I don't want to hear that! I will try Jon_Hildrum suggestion <There

results.

And, if it is dead, how did it die?

Hey! I pulled th whole case out, reinserted it, pushed it all the way in,
pushed the button and viola'. I guess the back was not connected to the port.
Next, to see if it is listed on "My Computer". Wish me "e"luck!"

Shannon

YES!! The drive is now listed, thank you for your help. (And they said it was
dead!)

I would like to rate your post as helpful, however I cannot find the options
list for "helpful/not helpful"

It's probably another underlying problem but if you open TweakUI, download
here:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/admins.htm

expand (+) My Computer > click Drives. Is your CD Drive letter (D) checked?
If not, check it, click OK .

However, I don't think this should cause the CD door not to open. But at
least you can see it in My Computer. By the way. Is your CD drive listed in
Device Manager?

Drew

Thank you Drew, I will look into that download. However, if you peek at my
string of threads in response to the other posts, you will see I had only a
simple (novice user) situation in that the whole box in the drive had become
disconnected from its port. Pulled it out, snapped it back in and miracle of
miracles, the drive appeared in "My Computer" and Device Manager, and played
the photos in a lovely slide show for me! I so appreciate the willingness of
other (more knowledgable) users to help me out, I WILL use this board again
when I come upon an "unsolvable" sitch"
Thanks to all...
