Drive letter change

Hi -
A colleague has been given a PC (XPprof + SP2) but the drive letter for the
hard drive is set to F and the Zip drive is set to C. I have changed the
letter for the zip drive to Z, (using Disk Management) but when I attempt to
change the letter for the hard drive to C, I get a message - 'Windows cannot
modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume'.

Can anyone advise how I can achieve the change?

You'd have to reinstall Windows with only a mouse, keyboard and
monitor attached during the installation.

The reason the drive letters are misconfigured is probably due
to the fact that someone installed Windows while the Zip drive,
or some other drive, was connected.

The driver letter for the boot volume (and system volume if the two are
different) cannot be changed from within XP. The way to do this is to
remove the zip drive and reinstall XP. Then attach the zip drive after the
install. This happened because the ZIP drive was attached during the
install so it grabbed the C: letter.

By the way if your colleague now owns this computer, the best thing is to do
a clean install of the OS and apps. That way he doesn't inherit all the OS
problems and quirks and other potential nasties such as malware and kiddie
porn.

I'll do a complete reinstall tomorrow, making sure, of course that the
additional drives are disconnected!

You can't. The message is correct. Windows cannot modify the drive
letter of your system volume or boot volume.

I have a similar situation here. For a somewhat different reason, my
first hard dive letter is also F:. It doesn't matter. Although F: is
unusual, it works the same with any letter.
