Drive Imaging Utilities?

I need some suggestions for a drive imaging utility that will image to an external hard
drive (USB 2.0 or FireWire), and allow for full image restore if my internal hard drive
dies. I'm assuming that in order to restore to a new drive, from an external hard drive,
that booting from a supplied CD is required. What would be the best utility for doing
this, that's the most user friendly, and has the smallest failure rate? I'm also assuming
that whatever the imaging utility is, that it will autotrack changes, so that I don't have
to keep making new images manually. Any help would be appreciated.

BootitNG can't be beat for value, simplicity of use, support and stability.
It includes a partitioner that is better [imo] than PM, and the best boot
manager bar none. And it's shareware so you can't lose by trying it. $40. I
couldn't say about advanced imaging capabilities, but there is a great user
forum where the software designer answers questions.

I've been using Acronis TrueImage for six months now with an external usb
Maxtor hd and have nothing but praise. I have had to restore my system
three times now, once due to an infection and just recently due to a hard
disk crash. I was a bit apprehensive after the crash as I purchased a larger
internal drive, but my system was up and running in 45 minutes with no loss,
everything was as it was. Quite remarkable actually.

I have to restore using True Image. Can you tell me how to do it? The help
file left me cold. Do you use startup recovery manager or the bootable Cd?

Thank you everyone for your help. Using the bootable CD I was able to get my
system back to my last True Image backup. Now my wife is happy because she
can do her thing whatever it is.
