DragDrop with desktop shortcut

I have a program that opens a file if the file's icon is dragged and dropped
onto the text area. However, if I create a shortcut icon and drag it
instead, I am opening the shortcut file, not the original file. How can I
get from the fully qualified path name of the shortcut icon to the original
file?
