Is there any danger of downloading a file from email as long as the file
is not opened?

Where's the logic of doing this and place the HD at risk? If
downloading in order to do a virus scan of the e-mailed file,
then download it first to a floppy diskette and then scan the
file. If infected, either clean or dispose by formatting the
floppy.

Hi,

Saving it from email to the hard drive will not infect the system, and if
the AV scanner is doing its job it should catch any nasties at this point.

If you do not have a reputable, regularly updated virus scanner installed,
you can most certainly become infected by merely downloading an email. Not
all payloads have to be executed in order to infect the target system.
