Recently when I try to download any updates, they all have been failing. It will finish the download process but won't even start the install progress. Does anyone know how to remedy this??

Are you by any chance running NAV 2004?
If you are, try un-installing it!
Then Try Windows Update again!

.
1 start run inetcpl.cpl click ok
2 delete cookies files history and downloaded program
files
3 make sure security and privacy are medium no higher.
4 c drive and tools folder options view, click show hidden
files and uncheck hide os files, yes and ok

delete c wutemp folder and c program files windows update

rename c windows system32 catroot catold and catroot2
catold2

start run cmd and register initpki.dll and softpub.dll
and wintrust.dll

regsvr32 then each dll and press enter, click ok
up arrow and backspace dll and then write next dll and
repeat till finished all three succeeded

reboot disable any firewall or av software other than xp
firewall.

connect to windows update thru ie and tools windows
update and try one update at a time and reboot after
install.
