Downloading patches

I am getting frustrated; I try to download new security
patches and other goodies, but find that more often than
not, I get the message, "The following items failed to
install. To try installing them again, click Review and
install updates, and then click Install Now again.

DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime

What can I do to get the download and installation? I have
gotten some patches and upgrades, but not all.

Try to use safe mode. Anytime you install a program or patch, you should
disable evertything loaded that shows in the bottom right hand corner - virus scan,
chat programs, Seti, etc. --- Steve

the Direct X 9.0 run time need to be installed on its own, you should have
had an error message saying this, try to install it on its own then patch
the rest.
