I am a new tech and a customer has asked me how long it
will take for me to download Windows XP Pro, Microsoft
Office 97 and Project 2000 on his 2 computers. He will be
providing 1 copy of XP Pro, 2 copies of Office 97 and a
burnt copy of project 2000. He needs an answer ASAP.
assistance appreciated.

Inform your customer he will need the following:

1. Two (2) copies of Windows XP Professional (two licenses)
2. Two (2) copies of Microsoft Office 97 (two licenses)
3. Two (2) copies of an original Project 2000 CD (two licenses)

Otherwise, he'll be in violation of Microsoft's licensing
policy, especially with XP Pro since it will not activate
on a second computer installation. If he refuses, tell him
to move on down the road since you would be liable
for Microsoft software licensing infractions.

Assuming the above prerequisites are met, it should take about
three (3) hours max, not including the updates from the
Windows Update and Office Update websites.

Hi Mike,

Depends on the speed and capacity of the system. A "quick" XP install is
about 40 minutes, Office & Project would be far less. A slow install of XP
could take 2 hours. Your client does realize that he needs two WinXP
licences to install it on two machines I hope? You will not be able to
activate the same copy on two different systems. Unless of course it is a
volume license.

The first thing you need to know is the
computer speed? Is he running at turtle
600 MZ or rabbity at 3GHZ?
This makes a whole lot of difference.

But I would plan on a full day of it if I
were you.

These are all commercial products for sale. They are not legally
available for download anywhere.

You apparently mean "install," not "download." One copy of
Windows XP can not legally be installed on two computers. And
burnt copies are not legal copies. Trying to get around the
activation requirements will undoubtedly take you a long time,
you may not succeed at all, and may get you into legal trouble.
If you want to be a success as a technician, don't begin your
career by getting involved in shady deals like this.

You must be extremly new to tech support as you have multiple posted the
same question within minutes if each other. Please wait up to 24 hours for
an answer before posting again. Also if you want to be a tech you should
familurize yourself with the windows end user license agreements. This is
basic tech stuff you need to get a handle on. Also learn the correct
termanology. You do not download windows or office, you install it.
Downloading is the transfer of files over the internet to your computer.

To answer your question, your customer needs:
2 windows xp licenses(one cd is ok, but you need two licenses)
2 office copies are ok( as long as they aren't pirated)
and he needs to buy project 2000 as it sounds like its a pirate version.

Depending on the condition and speed of his computers it could take hours to
install these programs or all day.

Yikes, I forgot to spell check - lol. Hope what I wrote makes sense.
Spelling corrected below.

As a new tech, you better learn the difference between "download" (grabbing
it off the internet) and "install" (setting it up on the computer). (-:

Figure about 1/2 hour for each program, along with the reboots.

Please don't call yourself a tech (new or otherwise), you give us (real
techs) a bad name.

Greetings --

Even a new technician should know that operating systems and
software are _installed_ to a computer, not downloaded.

And how would you expect us to know how fast you can do your job?
Based upon the level of experience and knowledge displayed so far, I'd
have to conclude that it would take you a few days.

Actually, considering that the customer isn't even providing you
with sufficient licenses for two computers - there has to be a
separate WinXP license for each computer, it should take considerably
longer.

Your first lesson is to learn the difference between downloading and
installing.
