Downloading files

My system won't download files when I choose to download a file the window
opens and by all appearances the file down loads but when I go to the folder
there is nothing there I have looked at the firewall and spyware blocker and
even temporarily disabled them with the same result any ideas what I might
try.

Are you sure you know where it's downloading them? Perhaps it's to someplace
other than where you think it is. After "downloading" a file that doesn't
appear to be where you expect it, try doing a search for it.
 
Good idea but i have tried that and also I have copied the file using the
browser icon so that ican track the whole file address that shouls lead me to
the file. I had a freind come over and look, he felt that some kind of
firewall was blocking the download but he had no luck finding any such
firewall. I use the microsoft firewall and e trust anti virus software. I
have attempted the download dozens of times with all sorts of files disabled.
just not sure which way to turn or what else to try. Thanks for the
responce though I do appreciate the thought and the effort.
