downloading .exe files

I don't receive an error message. I see the box that shows the file being
transfered but when it is finished nothing happens. The automatic set up
doesn't start, the file is not found on my computer anywhere. I know that I
have the most current Java installed.

What do you mean 'nothing happens'? did you click ok 'open'? was there a
long period of time with no activity after pressing open?

Suggestions:

1. If you are using IE7, try Firefox (www.mozilla.com). In Firefox's
options, set files to be downloaded to your Downloads folder in your
User folder.

2. If you are still unable to download these files with Firefox AND IE,
then try right-clicking and "Save Target As".

3. If that doesn't work, you have some third-party security program that
is not permitting you to download executables. You will need to see what
you have installed and look at its options.

I cannot download any files from the internet that are .exe files. How do I
fix that?
This could mean any number of things. Your mail program may have filters set
that way through your security settings. Your Virus protection software may
be stopping them. Even your ISP may be filtering them. .exe files are the
most used vehicles for virus transportation.

The diologue box shows the file transfering to my computer. When it is
finished, I click "OK" and then nothing happens. There is no activity at all.

It won't let me download FireFox and I have already tried "Save Target As"

Then be creative and download it on a working machine and transfer it
via a USB thumbdrive. Is this a standalone computer? On a domain (which
would explain everything)? Standard user? Can you download executables
from an administrative user account? Were you ever able to download
executables? If yes, what changed?

You've gotten good suggestions but have provided almost no information
about your computer, your Internet connection, and what you're doing.
People want to help you but you have to give us something with which to
work.

When it is done, you click "OK". That does not tell the computer to do
anything with the file you just downloaded. It just closes the window
because you have acknowledged that the download completed.

Try clicking "Open Folder" and tell us what you see. The download should be
listed, unless, perhaps, if you were downloading to your desktop. Then you
might get another message. Tell us what you get.

Just want you to know you are not alone in this "Vista Maze"!!!
This program is a total MESS!
What is happening to you...is also happening to me!!
I uploaded a bunch of my work to a storage place online....because I did not
think I could do a transfer from my other computer which was WindowsMe!!
So I was thinking ahead for a change!!
Everything is neatly stored!!
I download a bit at a time....not too much to overwork the computer....and I
go looking for what I just downloaded...only to find there is nothing there!!
Yesterday~I thought I had it beat!!
I took down the Firewall....everything I could think of...that Vista would
let me close out....in protection~~I downloaded one thing....and found
it....so I thought I was good to go!!!
RIGHT!!!
WRONG!!! WRONG!! WRONG!!
I downloaded more items from my storage place....and than deleted them from
there....thinking everything was at last working right!!
NOPE!!
I found nothing of what I downloaded....and they were .exe files this time!!
I lost some very expensive programs that I cannot rebuy!!
I do artwork all the time...I build Websites....now my programs that I
bought are all gone!!
I had bought these programs online....did not make anything to back them
up...because my computer never gave me this problem and I stored my .exe
files on two seperate external drives!!
Yes...I can get them again!! But only by unhooking this
computer...rehooking my older computer back up....and pulling everything out
all over again...when it took nearly a week of my time to upload everything
to my storage area!!
This Vista is the worse program ever made!!
It is really terrible!!
It has taken so much of my time...and that is money to me....just to figure
a few simple things out!!
And they tell me the program is "USER FRIENDLY"....they better think again
on that!!!
Nothing about Vista is User Friendly!!
It was built for security!! WHOSE??? Not mine!!!
Bill Gates maybe!!! But not mine!!
Security to me is how I want it set up...not how Bill Gates wants it set up!!
He has a major problem with being overly paranoid....just look at this
system...my God...he really has a problem!!!
On the otherhand...not everyone lives as paranoid as he does....some of us
like our FREEDOM!
There is NO FREEDOM with VISTA!!
You buy a computer.....and if you are like me...I saved for 4 years to be
able to buy a new one...and paid CASH.....only to have all my FREEDOM TAKEN
AWAY by a person who controls the computer indusftry!!!
The Bottom line here is this~~
WHAT IS SECURE TO ONE PERSON IS A PRISON SENTENCE TO ANOTHER!!!
WE ALL DO NOT LIVE IN TOTAL FEAR!!
A GOOD SYSTEM IS ONE THAT WOULD ALLOW US AS OWNERS OF OUR OWN
COMPUTERS....TO CHOOSE OUR OWN SECURITY LEVELS....NOT ONE THAT WAS CHOSEN BY
OTHERS AND THAN FORCED ON US AFTER WE HAVE BOUGHT NEW COMPUTERS!!!
THIS IS PURE AND SIMPLE "CRAP"!!!
I have wasted a week of my time getting nowhere fast!!!
Time is money to me...as it is to most people today!
Most of us can't afford to waste our time trying to figure out everything on
a machine that simply will not allow you to do anything you might be use to!!
I know for myself....this machine...even though it is a nice one...will be
going back to the store I bought it from!!
I do not have the time to waste fighting with some freakin' machine!!
Believe it or not...I would love to place WindowsME on this new machine!!
Yes I know Microsoft does not support WindowsMe anymore....so what??
They do support this FREAKIN" VISTA....and it is nothing but a pain in the
neck!
I cannot do any of my own work properly on this machine as it is....it will
not allow me to use certain things like my bought and paid for Paint Shop Pro
10!!!
WHY??
It tells me that it is not a LEGAL COPY!!
I paid for the program!!
AND~~~it is not only that program I am having trouble with...it is many
others!!
Programs that DO belong to me....and I cannot put on this machine!
Programs that I need and use for my Graphic work online!!
This is total crap...and I am being nice here!!
I am one of those people that will not be beaten by a system or a machine!!
So I normally fight all the way to getting things fixed!
But with the money I put out for this new machine...fighting is something I
feel I should not have to do!!
I really feel like throwing the machine right through the WALL!!
But it cost so dang much!!
I HATE this VISTA thing....it is terrible!!
Not Happy at all~~
