Downloaded program file folder.

I am using WINXP. I am having troubles with ActiveX. I have been told to
clear my " Downloaded Program File" folder. I have searched extensively. I am
in contact right now " VoIP" with another WINXP user, and they have no
problem finding that folder. I have found that folder hundreds of times on
my PC. But now can't. Is this resulting in me not being able to view ActiveX
content. ?

The correct name is Downloaded Program Files folder.

Start | Run | Type or paste:

%windir%\Downloaded Program Files

Click OK.

Or...

Right click the IE icon | Properties | General tab | Settings button |
View Objects button

Or...
Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Settings button |
View Objects button

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files

ActiveX controls that are installed on your system would be at \%windr%\Downloaded Program Files
where %windir% is usually on C drive at folder \WINNT or \Windows

Who advised to clear it? and why? Be careful you don't remove controls that do work. Notably 1 or 2 of the Windows Update controls.

What kind of specific problem do you have with ActiveX? and on what websites?
 
Wesley when I do that,run thing. it opens up a window, and the window is
titled "open with", below that it says, "choose the program. You want to use
to open this file" and below that. It says File: downloaded program files.
In the window, listed under programs, it shows all of the programs that I
have installed on my computer. There is a browse button. And also a Ok
button and a cancel button.

I'm not quite sure about what to do next. Please help.

Maurice. Specifically....I try to go to Norton Internet Security website.
There I have been able to check my security. It's a test that is performed by
Norton. I used to be able to run the test no problem. They show a detailed
account of your security...IE: Hacker prevention...Antivirus staus and so on.
Now when I go there, I click on start scan to check security. A window comes
up saying......Look for the Microsoft Information Bar and accept ActiveX
download. I have done this a thousand times before. Just started to not work
I think on Sunday last. Anyways, no " Information Bar" appears. Note:
Sometimes I also get that little yellow strip that hangs neath my IE toolbar.
I can usually click on it and click on Download ActiveX.

Make a long story short. At Norton I can only be offered a partial scan due
to the fact I can't see the Info Bar. 4 of the 6 available security check
scans I get. I have also mentioned in my posts that I have tried to locate
the " Downloaded Program Files Folder ". I know where it is, I have browsed
it a thousand times in the past. Either through Star/Run and type
%windir%\Downloaded Program Files
or exploring...it does not show like it used to. Now all i get is that
little window that is called " Open with". All my programs are ther. IE
Dreamweaver Fireworks. ( Macromedia stuff ). Microsoft
Excell/Word/Frontpage...etc;. Nothing including Notepad shows anything when
opened.

Please help.

Hi Scott,

Try this first.

Start | Run | Paste this in the box:

regsvr32 occache.dll

Click OK.

A message should popup.
---------------------------
RegSvr32
---------------------------
DllRegisterServer in occache.dll succeeded.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Reboot your machine. And then check the Downloaded Program Files folder.

%windir% is an environment variable that is the location of the system
directory.

Typing or pasting %windir% into the Start | Run box opens to the Windows
folder on whatever drive it is located. I.e. C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT.

Windows XP can be installed in either WINDOWS or WINNT.

%windir%\Downloaded Program Files
is the same as
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files
if Windows is installed on the C: drive.

As stated above it could be C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files.

What opens if you paste %windir% into the Start | Run box and click OK?

Did you try the other two methods? The View Objects button should open
%windir%\Downloaded Program Files wherever it is located. Unless, maybe
it's been moved.

Do a Search for Downloaded Program Files.
