In the past I was able to left click and mpeg, mp3, or any
media file and then a download box would pop up. Now, left
clicking the file that I want to download will just launch
Windows media Player. Then the player says that the file
is not valid. how can I revert back to the original way?

Find the MIME type that matches the file extenssion that is causing you a problem in the registry for IE and delete it. This will cause IE to fail to understand what to do with a certain file type and prompt you for what to do next. This is where you should start looking. You will need to look for something like audio/mpeg or whatever the file extension is that you're looking to alter

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Media\MimeType

You might also want to take a look at the option in media player and prevent it from re-registering file type associations. I personally prevent media player from doing anything other playing running when I want it to
