Hello,
can I ask how 'true' the FP 2003 slow pages reports are - I have a 16kb page
that it syas will take 379 seconds to download - I can't see the logic in
that - othetr thanit is linked (hyperlink) to a photogallery which is very
lareg and due to be moduifed before I put it on line.
Anmy suggestions?
regards,
Jacquie

It is just an estimate
But the 16 kb file does not include your images which are the largest part of the download time

Thabnks for replying ,
can I just confirm - the dopwnload time includes all the pages it is
hyperlinked to and does not just take into account the 'actual' page^?

It is an estimate of just that page w/ all its content (images, include pages, script, themes, styles, etc)
- does not include size of linked pages

So basically a 16kb page that comes out as 379 seconds for download is
totally way off line? - should I not bother looking at the dwonload times but
just the size of the page - what is the optimum size of a page? under 50kb?

The best size for a Home page is under 50K, for any other page under
60K - but there will be exceptions. The home page should fully load
in under 15 seconds, other pages in about 20.

The size includes the page itself, images displayed on the page,
images (for image swaps/rollovers) downloaded with the page, CSS
files, JavaScript files, Flash files. If the page contains an Iframe,
the size includes the page (with all its encumbrances) loaded into the
Iframe.

379 seconds is way over the top - but FP does get these estimates
wrong, sometimes. The best way is to try it and see.

I have a page that has an estimated download time of 82 seconds at 56k
dialup. In practice, the download (with caches cleared) is only 45
seconds on dial up, and faster with normal web usage - the page is
halfway through a slideshow, and most images involved would normally
be in the cache.

Hello again,
I still am not sure why a 16kb page should for example be down as taking
36seconds to load - it is only wriint with just one interactive button on
that page.

Surely that estimate must be wrong and if that is wrong so are all the others?

Sorry Murray, it is not published yet - I just wanted to try and sort out any
problems - or as many as I can fix - before publishing,

Jacquie
