I've googled this issue and found numerous posts linking the problem to
Zonealarm 5.1.x. Let me elaborate on the issue.

Using Xnews, had sudden unexplained problems with downloading multi-part
binaries. Music_1.mp3, Music_2.mp3, Music_3.mp3 would result instead of
Music.mp3.

Google research suggests Zonealarm 5.1.x is the culprit. Tried this:

1) Disabled ZA 5.1.x, got the same result with xnews.

2) Uninstalled ZA 5.1.x (/clean) and got the same result.

3) Installed ZA 4.5.x and got the same result

4) Disabled ZA 4.5.x and got the same result

5) Uninstalled ZA 4.5.x and got the same result

6) Installed Kerio and got the same result.

Something else is obviously amiss and I am not figuring it out.

Something odd - mpg or mp3 files don't download properly. But a .wmv
file does.

Suggestions, please?

Thanks.

Newer versions of zonealarm are extremely bloated. And, if you uninstall
it, it still leaves files running which you have to remove/disable
manually.

You gave Xnews permission to access the internet zone I take it? This
problem just came up out of the blue and Xnews was operating perfectly one
second and not the next, right? Have you checked with your newsgroup server
to see if they have had any problems. When this happens with my newsgroup
access it is almost always because there is a problem on the server end and
not on mine. I am not familiar with Xnews but, of course, it must have the
capability to combine multi-part, yEnc messages in order for you to get a
single Music_XXX.mp3 file out of multiple parts.

XNews indeed will combine multi-part yenc messages. IE6 won't. I too was
having problems with Xnews reporting that it downloaded the files, but
could not decode them. At first this was an intermittent problem, not
affecting all music files. I even switched to the Gravity newsreader,
which seemed to help somewhat, but the XNews interface is much easier to
work with. Eventually, though, I shut down ZoneAlarm 5.1.033
temporarily(not an uninstall) while downloading and the problem went
away,i.e. XNews decodes the files properly.
