download impossible with ie6

G. T

In the last month a problem had developed with IE6 running
on my friends Windows ME computer. No downloading is
possible of e-mail attachments or any service packs or
patches on the microsoft site. The the same error message
is given after a vaiable amount of time it reads:

Internet Explorer cannot download (file name) from
download (current site)Internet Explorer was not able to
open this Internet site. The requested site is either
unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again
later.
OK

The article Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 816868
seems to address this but offers no solutions until the
next service pack, however she can't download them anyway.

Does anyone have any insite on how to fix this problem?
thanks Gene

No downloading is
possible of e-mail attachments or any service packs or
patches on the microsoft site.

Do you have a link we could use as an example?

Also what do you mean by "downloading...of e-mail attachments"?
FYI once you have an E-mail, "attachments" *are* downloaded.
Do you mean that you can't click on links in an E-mail?
Again give an example.

One possibility is that there is a DNS problem with those addresses
and one possible cause of that is incorrect overrides from the HOSTS
file. You could try renaming the HOSTS file and then ping the
server names in the links you are having trouble with. Note that
you are only using the ping to check the lookup. It is possible
that a normal response may be inhibited by that site. nslookup would
be a better command to use for this, if you have it. Also, if you have it
telnet to port 80 would be a better way of checking connectivity
even if the ping works. (E.g. it could prove that there is a server which
is active there.)

For other suggestions specific to Windows Update use its troubleshooter:

Until you have some specific diagnostics which prove that the problem
described by 816868 is happening you should assume that your case
will be something simpler.

As I said the problem was fixed with
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 183506.
The problem was whenever you had to click a link to
download a file (view or down load an e-mail attachment in
yahoo, or download a service pack or patch from the
microsoft site) the down load box would appear, however
the particulars were never filled in(size, download time,
etc), this would stay on the screen for varing amounts of
time and then the error message described in '183506'
would appear. -- following the steps in this article fixed
the problem.
thanks again Gene
