I have Vista, Outlook 2007, and Excel 2007. I sent an Excel spreadsheeet
file with an extension of .xls to two friends. One of them was able to open
it, but the other one could not. I am not sure what e-mail program she has,
but she has Win XP and Excel 2003. The error message read "This file is not
in a recognizable format." Any advice will be much appreciated.

Are you SURE that the extension was xls and NOT xlsx? Excel 2007 saves by
default to xlsx format which is not natively readable by prior versions...

Gordon, I checked, and you're right, it is xlsx. Would it be possible to
save it instead in a xls format?

yes - open the spreadsheet and then do Save-As and you will get the option
to save as 97-2003 format....

It worked like a charm. Zillion thanks.

YW - if you need to, you can set the default "save" in 2007 to be that of
97-2003 format....
