Download And Save XP Updates..

J

JD

I'm in the process of building a new computer and I don't look forward
to updating XP. I'll be installing XP home edition SP2 but I'll still
have a boat-load of updates to install after that.

I have the following web page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...02-BAE0-4317-A1A9-0C56CD979D05&DisplayLang=en

as the place to download all the updates. The problem is there are 879
results and I'm not sure I need them all?

When I sort them by Popularity, I see #19, Standalone Update Package For
Windows XP Service Pack 3. It is the "release candidate" with a release
date of 12/18/2007. The file name is windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe
and it is 336.1 MB in size.

This is the "beta" version of SP3? Has anyone here tried this?

If running this this SP3 beta is not a good idea then how do I determine
which of the other 879 updates to run and what order to I run them in? I
was planning to download them to my 500MB USB enclosure HD.

I just did the same thing with 2 computers and just the updates to automatic
and let it do it's thing. I think it downloaded and installed less than a
hundred.

Do not download XP SP3........it is not ready for prime time yet.
All of the other "updates" are best done thru XP Update site...where is
scans your system and then tells you what might be needed. Even then you
should only download the High Priority ones.........look at the optional
software ones and see if you want to............and only download the
Hardware ones if they apply to a Microsoft Products...other Hardware drivers
should be updated from the manufacturers website.

Normally on a high speed Internet connection this might take an
hour........an hour well spend to make certain the RIGHT update is applied

JD,
First, for trouble-free use then do not install a beta version.

2nd, having recently installed XP with SP2, then choosing Custom update
resulted iin more than 100 updates. You want to choose Custom to get the
full set of updates applicable to your system. Keep perfoming a Custom
update until Microsoft finally tells you that there are no more Critical,
Software, and Hardware updates.

Get ready to spend a half of a day just getting XP and all of the updates
installed. Then comes the fun of installing all of those programs dear to
your heart.

Have fun,

Don't install the Beta Service Pack.

Download and integrate the Update into your Windows XP CD. Then you will
have a better CD and less updates to install if you veer do this again. You
could even customize the CD (even make it into a DVD) so that it installs
more than just Windows XP. It could install your MS Office product, Adobe
Acrobat, 7Zip, Quicktime, Real Alternative, Firefox, whatever your heart
desires without you doing anything more than inserting the CD/DVD and
booting up to it and letting it go....

As for the updates - SP2+PostSP2 updates... An easy way is to get an
application called the Windows Updates Downloader:
http://wud.jcarle.com/ProgramFiles.aspx

Install it - get the right definition file and let it grab all the updates
for you

nLite is an application that could help you integrate the patches...

Want a more manual solution?

Here's SP2 through April 2007... It's a start. heh

Sorry, but I decide what is a critical update. The critical update to
IE6 was not a good update when it first came out. I appreciate your

well I've got SP3 RC installed on my mashine, and it works with no
