downgrading OS

I work for a private school for handicapped children. Recently 4 PC's
running winXP Home (OEM license) were donated to the school. To integrate
these donated computers to our network they need to be running XP pro or
2000 pro. Of course we can buy licenses to upgrade the machines to XP pro
(with academic discount). But I was wondering, could we downgrade the OS to
2000 pro at no cost.

No, there are no downgrade rights to Windows 2000 if
using Windows XP Home Edition.

Are you sure? Is not XP Home considered an upgrade with respect to
Win2K? If that is the case it is my understanding that MS has always
allowed use of of a higher level OS license to cover the use of a
previous version.

I would love it if this were true.... would save us the cost of 5 (since
volume licenses sell in multiples of 5)
additional licenses.
It only seems reasonable that you could downgrade.

No, it's not. That's not a supported upgrade path. Going from a
"Professional" operating system to a "Home" one is considered a
downgrade even though Windows XP is newer than Windows 2000.

If you have some computers (plural) already running XP Pro, what license do
you have? If you have more than one pc, the license may cover the new ones.
An MS expert would have details of how many PCs different licenses cover.

All of the XP machines we have were either purchased with XP pro
preinstalled or donated with XP pro installed, all have the MS Certificate
of Authenticity on the case.
Our 2000 pro machines are all refurbished PC's with C of A's under the MS
program for qualified K-12 schools and 501 (c) 3 public charities. All have
the MS Certificate of Authenticity on the case.

We've purchased media and volume licenses for office 2003 standard from CDW,
So I contacted them yesterday for prices.
The academic discount makes the upgrade quite reasonable, so I guess I will
be ordering the licenses today.

Thanks all for your help.
