Because of a hidden icon problem I goggled to Doug's Windows Tweaks and
Tips.
http://www.dougknox.com/
I found a VBS script there
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_resettrayicons.htm
that claims to fix my problem. (xp_pastitems.vbs) But when I tried to run
the script Norton SCREAMED at me "Malicious script detected" "High Risk". So
I chickened out and did not run it.
Are any of the Microsoft MVPs at this site familiar with Doug's site and
should I trust this script?
By the way, my problem is that inactive icons will not hide. (WinXP sp2) The
registry setting is correct and toggles between 0 and 1 when I change the
inactive icon setting. But the icons in the tray are all still there and the
little arrow is NOT there. Looks just like Win98.

lol..any vbs script will generate this warning - did it really scream at
you? Doug's script's are fine - they are recommended all the time.

Doug's repair scripts are 100% safe and often involve making
a registry repair. You need to disable Norton before using the
repair script.

Norton AntiVirus will announce that ANY script file "may" be dangerous. It
is up to you to decide whether to run it, or not.

Doug's scripts are fine. He "IS NOT" a malicious person!

Wrong!

You DO NOT have to disable Norton AntiVirus before running a .vbs script.
All you have to do is choose "allow this script to run" (either once or
always) when you get the popup!

Thanks all of you for replying. While waiting I did stumble across the Kelly
Korner's site and followed instructions under "Chevron Missing". Sure
enough... telling first icon to always hide brought back the chevron. But
then when I told it to hide when inactive the chevron was gone again. But
randomly turning the various icons to always hide and hide when inactive
fixed the problem. I now have all icons set to hide when inactive and the
chevron is back and the icons are hiding. If the problem re-occurs I will
try the VBS script from Doug's site.

Did you bother reading the information clearly listed on his site as well as
mine?

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this
is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These
scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Any of Doug's scripts (or Kelly's) are safe. When Norton complains, pick
"Allow the entire script once". There ARE malicious scripts out there
though, so Norton always gives you a chance to intercept them.

Google took me directly to the page on Doug's site that had the potential
fix for my problem. There was no warning on "that" page about anti-virus
alerts. I did browse back to his root page to get an idea of who Doug was.
After I posted I continued to Google and came across your site. (Kelly's) I
did see your notice (see below Note:) but I had already posted my question.
The Norton alert is a bit scary. "Malicious script detected" "High Risk"
"Stop this script (recommended)
I think you would agree that halting the script was the proper thing to do
until I learned more about it source.
Sorry to cause such a stir. I'm glad you two are out there.
