Double spacing in word

H

Henry Bradford

I am a college student. For our term papers, we must
write in MLA format, with 1" margins top, bottom, left and
right, double spaced.

I am constantly graded down on my term papers because MS
word, when paragraph is set to double space, some
sentences drop to the next page instead of the next line,
leaving a big gap at the bottom of some of my pages. 1.5"
instead of 1".

Can someone, preferably someone from Microsoft, give me a
formal statement on MS Word's functionality so that I can
provide this to my instructor? Thanks!!

How Word behaves is a function of what settings you're
using the paragraph formatting you've applied to it. For
your case, it would be prudent to set up styles for each
of your paragraph instances, and set each with the
appropriate settings of keeping a line on a page with next
so that page breaks happen where you want them.

Format | Paragraph | Line and Page Breaks. Clear the check box for
"Widow/orphan control." Also, you'll find that Exact spacing (24 pts for
most ordinary font sizes) will give you better spacing than Double.
