Double icons on desktop

I have an odd sort of problem with my Win2000
system. Whenever I try to post an icon to the
desktop, I get TWO of them. They can be moved
around indpendently, but if I delete one, the
other goes also. And if I rename one, the other
gets the same name.

I just recently (foolishly, maybe!) deleted a
couple of folders from the user profile section
(the ones that are listed under "Documents and
settings"). This problem started right after that.

Everything else seems to work OK, but this
behaviour is mighty annoying and I hope someone
can suggest a cure.

Thanks,

Then the profile may now be corrupt. While logged on as another user with
administrative rights you can rename the suspect profile, then when the user
next logs on a new profile will be created from an image in \default user

Else run regedt32.exe and have a look at the Reg_Expand_Sz string values of

"Desktop"
found in
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
(should be) %USERPROFILE%\Desktop
and

"Common Desktop"
found in
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
(should be) %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop

Sound like they're pointing to the same place.

HI, Dave,

You were exactly right. I followed the trail you laid out and fixed the
corrupted registry key.

Problem solved.

You da man!! Thanks a lot.
