Double hibernation

My computer almost invariably insists on immediately and automatically going
back into hibernation when I awaken it from a hibernation period. When I
reawaken it from this self-induced hibernation, there are no further problems.

This problem tends to occur most predictably when the computer has been
hibernating for more than a short period of time. In other words, if I put
the beast into hibernation and then awaken it 5 minutes later, I typically
don't have any problems. But if the computer hibernates for hours, such as
overnight, then I run into this problem.

Not sure where to start trouble shooting this. I've googled and hunted
through the newsgroups, but I'm not finding anything on this particular issue.

Any suggestions would be most welcome!
